Author Qarnita Loxton's being-series has made her a household name in the literary world and all her book reads like the best friend you want to have.

Qarnita has a new book out titled 'What's Wrong with June?' a story of a married accountant who is channelling her Stella era in the new year and works on getting her groove back.

June created a vision board that makes her excited about what is to come, but is the change good? Well, Qarnita is in the studio to tell us more.

In their first-ever remote interview, Fiona Snyckers and Gail Schimmel are joined by the charming and delightful Qarnita Loxton. As well as being an award-winning novelist, Qarnita is a regular listener to the podcast, so it was great to have her on this side of the microphone.



Qarnita is the author of the 'Being' series of novels, including Being Dianne, Being Lily, Being Kari, and Being Shelley. Qarnita describes how she recently submitted a new manuscript to a publisher and is now feeling bereft without it, as she waits to be drawn into a new idea. She tells Fiona and Gail how a writing course run by Mike Nichol got her into authorship, and how she situates her plots within detailed timelines.



Gail asks Qarnita whether she feels obliged to use her voice to speak on behalf of the South African woman's Muslim community or feels free to write about whatever she likes. Fiona asks about the importance of women's friendships in Qarnita's books and in real life.

About the book:
Shelley Jacobsen is in her forties with three-year-old twins and feels trapped in her life. She thought returning to the working world would provide some excitement but the coffee and décor shop that she opened with her friend Di is proving to be just another gilded cage. To make matters worse, Jerry, her husband, is newly consumed with Jewish guilt since having the twins, which reminds Shelley that she will always be a Shiksa as far as his family is concerned. Then she meets Wayde Smith, a sexy twenty-two-year-old surfer who smells like a Pina Colada Coconut Vanilla Dessert. She hires him as the shop's new barista and he offers to surf coach her kids on weekends. So, why can't a woman be friends with a young male employee? At least someone seems to appreciate last year's tummy tuck and boob lift. Shelley is tired of fighting with Jerry; she just wants some fun. But will the fun stay harmless, or is Shelley heading for a total wipeout? Being Shelley is a mix of light and dark as it touches on issues of female ageing, sexual harassment, long-term marriage, motherhood, and evolving female friendships. The third book in the Being-series, which started with Being Kari and Being Lily, but it can also be read as a stand-alone novel.
